Tips for successful bathroom decorating

The bathroom, believe it or not, is one of the more heavily trafficked rooms in the home, and probably the smallest. Even with your space limitations, there’s no reason the bathroom’s decor shouldn’t reflect a personal touch. Focus on making the room as functional and organized as possible, with plenty of storage, but also as beautiful and relaxing as you like. Having a calming yet practical bathroom will significantly improve your morning and evening routines.

If you’re in the mood to revamp your bathroom, here are some tips to inspire your decorating.

Get Creative with Your Furniture.

Paint your vanity a bright color, and then add a pair of new knobs (what about old-fashioned door knockers for a surprising effect?) to the doors. Or, scour the flea market or yard sales for a vintage-looking cabinet that you can turn into a vanity. If you want to get even more creative, try this DIY project: cover your existing vanity in vinyl wallpaper for a quirky finish.

Use a Ladder for Storage.

This may sound strange at first, but a rustic or shabby-chic looking ladder is a great way to hang towels and store washcloths, loofahs, toilet paper and other bathroom necessities. Try to choose a ladder with wide rungs for the most storage options, or build your own!

Consider Your Flooring.

If you are replacing your current bathroom flooring, look into ceramic, marble or stone tiles, all of which are very durable and water-resistant. If you have the budget, try heated floors for those cold winter mornings.  Or, finish off your floors with a nice high gloss, if that’s your taste.

Pick a Statement Shower Curtain.

Plain or boring shower curtains are a thing of the past. Look for a shower curtain that packs a punch! Many designers, including Lilly Pulitzer and Diane von Furstenberg, make their own curtains. JCPenney carries a myriad of shower curtains that will fit in with any decorating palate.

Decorate Glass Shower Doors.

To dress up plain glass shower doors, shop around for some decals that will add some pizzazz. Try a big box home store or a novelty shop.

Paint Your Tub.

Often the focal point of the room, make your tub look a little fancier with a coat of paint. Try a soft pastel yellow or a bright peach color. If you are shopping for a new bathtub, don’t forget to sit in it before you buy it, to make sure it’s a comfortable fit! You may look silly in the store, but you want to make informed choices.

Try Chalkboard Paint.

Use chalkboard paint on a wall or the entire room! Then scour Pinterest for some inspirational or funny quotes you can look at as you brush your teeth. Or, draw a chalkboard “mirror” shape above the sink.

Select Beautiful and Functional Mirrors.

In addition to the mirrors above your vanity, you should consider adding a lighted make-up mirror and a shaving mirror in the shower. Make sure your mirrors complement the rest of the decor in the room. If your vision is a little more eccentric, try multiple mirrors over your vanity instead of one large mirror.

Go for an “Old-School Glamor” Effect.

Who says bathrooms have to be boring? Dress up your bathroom by painting the walls a chocolate-y brown and adding a luxe crystal chandelier. A claw-footed tub, billowy curtains and plenty of plush white towels complete the look.

Install Two Sinks.

If your bathroom only came with one sink, add another one with matching faucet and fixtures to the opposite wall in a “dueling sinks” arrangement.

Add Windows.

A windowless-bathroom can feel a little constricting. If the room doesn’t connect to any outdoor space, try adding window cut-outs into the adjacent rooms. This will add more outside light and open up the room.
