Repair and refurbish for cheaper home improvements
This article covers ways to refurbish your home without spending a lot of money. It talks about things that you can do to update existing furniture and ideas about fixing what you have rather than throwing things away; repairing and revamping things rather than buying new.
There are plenty of ways to redecorate a home without spending a lot of money; put the items that you already have to good use and save money as well as reducing waste at the same time. This way you can do your bit for the environment and have a new look for your home at a budget price.
Fix it don't throw it away.
Many people will simply throw away broken machinery or furniture where a simple repair would be cheaper and better for the environment. Broken furniture can easily be repaired in many cases and a coat of paint can make old items look as good as new, or add an antique look to newer things.
Repairing appliances such as vacuums can be really straightforward; buying items like Dyson spare parts and replacing filters and seals on your appliances can make them as good as new at a fraction of the price that buying a new one would be. Repair battered or stained wooden furniture by sanding it down and re-varnishing or painting depending on your tastes. Wooden flooring can also be sanded and varnished; check under your carpets and consider revealing wooden floors rather than new carpets.
Redecorate with a lick of paint.
Painting a room can make it look completely different; use a light colour or a paint with reflective particles to brighten up a dark room and warm colours for a chilly room to give it a cosy feeling. Kitchen cupboards benefit from a lick of paint; there is often no need to replace an entire kitchen, just add new doors or even paint them for a really cost effective update.
A change as simple as swapping old door handles for new can create an entirely new look in your kitchen, or try adding a splash of colour with matching appliances, dish towels and wall art. A living room can be changed in a similar way; choose a signature colour and use it on one wall, or buy cushions, curtains or ornaments that carry the colour throughout the room.
It may seem easiest to just throw away broken items, but appliances such as vacuums can often be easily fixed with a simple new part or by cleaning the filters. A lick of paint on old furniture or in a dingy room creates a whole new look and gives you the satisfaction of a redecorating job or new furniture without the cost. New kitchens can be very expensive, but simply changing the doors is a great way to minimise the cost and maximise the effect. So put down the bin bag and get creative!
