Tips when looking for a used car to buy

Buying a used car can be a big pain in the bum but with the right information and a little bit of guidance you can pick up a real bargain.

A second hand car does not have to be a banger of a car it can be only 6 months old, so dispel any prejudices about second hand cars. Everybody likes a brand new car but if you think about it logically the people that buy brand new are losing a lot of money!

When you drive a car off the forecourt of a car dealership the car will instantly depreciate in value and that is a really big problem. There is no exact figure about how much a new car will lose when it is driven off the forecourt but a reasonable guess would be 30% this is based on what I have seen in the past. So when you see someone driving a new car just look at them to say silly!!

Now when looking for a used car you need to decide what you are after, this sounds obvious but for many people this is not. Do you want a 4×4 or a people carrier maybe you fancy a sporty two seaters but maybe you just want a normal family car.

Once you have decided on the car you are after you need to consider the budget you have, whether you take out a car loan or whether you pay cash you need to have a budget. If you are taking out a car loan then you need to consider how much you can afford to re pay on the loan and the best advice is you need to think if you can afford the repayments if you do not work.

If you can’t then maybe you should re-think your budget. If you are buying a car with cash then this is a really easy step to follow, just only spend what you can afford. So now you have decided on the car you are after and the budget you have to spend now you just need to locate that car in that budget, it sounds simple but this is by far one of the hardest bits.

I personally look for low mileage cars as they still will have a lot of life in them, I rather have an older lower mileage car than a newer higher mileage car as I just feel that the older car would have had an easier life.

Where do you look when you are after a used car? Well I would first cruel through your local news papers and see whether any of you local car dealers have the car you are after then if they do go round and organize a test drive. When you are sure that the car is the car for you then walk away and try and find that car on the internet at the lowest price you can.

6 tips to make your android device run faster

Android operating system is evidently getting popular due to its user-friendly interactive UI. Therefore customers prefer Android gadgets, which range from high to low-end ones. The users do suffer many issues as their devices get older.

If the device is not maintained properly, it ends up as a clumsy device that runs slower and doesn’t give appropriate response to its user. So this is why it is so important to take care of your Android device regularly.

If your Android device has gotten slower though it wasn’t earlier, then you can follow the given steps below to get it back to the normal condition. However, do note that the following the underneath steps may not produce the desired result and your device could get harmed. So carefully read the instructions and then apply them.

1. Restart your Android Device.

If your Android device suddenly gets slower while being used, just restart the device. It may not be a great option to opt for, but usually it works. Just switch it off and then again turn it on now check the device out.

If the device works as usual then no need to again restart it. But if the device gets slower repeatedly even after getting restarted or initially it works fine but later gets slower, then leave this temporary option and go for the other substitutes.

2. Restore Factory Settings.

It is sort of best option to get your device back to the normal condition. However, here you lose all of your downloaded data in the device memory. And the procedure makes your device all new when it was bought, well internally.

The option is best if your device gets slower for the first time. But if it becomes usual, then the procedure couldn’t help you further. However, if you are trying this method then it will be better if you back up your data earlier. The ‘Restore Factory’ option could be found under the ‘Setting’ > ‘Privacy’ (may vary depending upon the device and the Android version).

3. Uninstall unnecessary apps.

Another reason behind the getting-slower issue could be the existence of loads of applications in the device. You should make a list of usable apps and get rid of others. As a result there will be some free space for seamless running of other apps.

To uninstall an app, go to the ‘Setting’ > ‘Applications’ > ‘Manage Applications’ (may vary) and uninstall it. Once uninstalled, test your device. If you are still having the problem then just restart your Android gadget. That might suffice.

4. Install necessary apps.

If you are having loads of application memory but still suffering from the issue, then there might be some bugs or malwares, which may perhaps cause the device to run slower. In this case, installation of some useful apps might come in handy.

5. Update Firmware on the Device.

The device may also run slower because of outdated operating system. So you should update it regularly whenever an update is available. The update fixes bugs, lags etc. You could upgrade your Android OS via OTA or compatible suite. Go to the ‘Settings’ > ‘About Device’ > ‘Software Update’ > ‘Update’ to get your device upgraded automatically. You can also use the official compatible suite to do so.

6. Root the Device.

This process is highly effective and risky as well. If the rooting process is unsuccessful, it might break down your device. So whenever you are rooting your device remember to read all instructions. But if the process is successful, then there will be quite a few benefits like processor of your device could be clocking faster than it used to be but in this case more battery life will be consumed.

After rooting you can also install custom ROM, which may solve many issues with your Android gadget but it is highly risky thus not recommended. Another liberty you’ll get after rooting is to uninstall the preloaded apps.

12 simple tips to save your petrol

1. Pump up your tyres.

Keeping your tyres inflated is one of the easiest and most important things. Saving petrol means saving money one can do to improve fuel economy.

If a range is recommended by the manufacturer, the higher pressure should be used to maximize fuel efficiency. Deflated tyres run hot and jeopardize safety. It will also cause the tyres to wear out prematurely, affect the vehicles adversely, and hurt the fuel economy by increasing the rolling resistance.

Tyres lose about 1 psi pressure per month due to air loss caused by the tyre hitting holes, bumps and kerbs. Therefore, the tyres should be checked at least once a month. Just 1 tyre deflated by 2 psi will result in a 1% increase in fuel consumption.

2. Drive at moderate speed.

Avoiding high speeds on open roads results in safer driving and better fuel economy. In highway driving, over 50% of the power produced by the engine is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. Drag and thus fuel consumption increases rapidly at speeds above 90km/h.

On the average, a car uses about 15% more fuel at 100km/h, and 25% more fuel at 110km/h compared to when it is doing only 90km/h.

However, this should not lead one to conclude that the lower the speed, the better the fuel economy - because it is not. The fuel consumption of an average car increases sharply at speeds below 50km/h.

3. Clean the air-filter regularly.

Clogged air filters increase fuel consumption by restricting airflow to the engine, and thus should be cleaned/replaced when necessary. Clogged air filters can increase fuel consumption by up to 10%.

4. Use thinner tyres.

Tyres with thick width will improve the handling of your car. However, it will also increase your car's fuel consumption. Thicker tyres mean more rolling resistance!, and thus will consume more fuel.

5. Start up the car properly.

With today's cars, it is not necessary to prime the engine first by pumping the accelerator pedal repeatedly. Do not crank the engine excessively. This only wastes fuel. When starting the engine, idle it no more than 30 seconds to warm it up. An engine will warm up faster on the road. However, avoid sudden acceleration before the engine has warmed up sufficiently.

6. Drive in high gear (overdrive).

The engine runs most efficiently between around 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. To maintain these low revs you should change up through the gears as soon as practical and before the revs reach 2500 rpm.

For automatic transmission cars, you should always switch on your overdrive to help save fuel. Overdrive will allow your engine to change gears at lower revs. It also puts your transmission into an "economy" mode and lets it engage the final "overdrive" gear when cruising to ! keep the rpms extra low, thereby increasing fuel economy.

7. Travel light.

Avoid carrying any unnecessary weight in your car. On the average, every 50kg added load in your car will increase fuel consumption by 2%.

8. Anticipate traffic ahead.

A driver can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10% by anticipating traffic conditions ahead and adjusting the speed accordingly, and avoiding tailgating and thus unnecessary braking and acceleration.

Accelerations and decelerations waste fuel. Braking and abrupt stops can be minimized by not following too closely and slowing down gradually when approaching a red light. It takes up to six times as much fuel to move a car from a dead stop than it does for one moving at just a few km/h.

9. Avoid strong acceleration.

The fuel consumption remains at a minimum during steady driving at a moderate speed of about 90km/h. Keep in mind that every time the accelerator is hard pressed, the engine goes into a "fuel-enrichment" mode of operation that wastes fuel.

The vehicle should always be gradually and smoothly accelerated. Using cruise control on highways can help maintain a constant speed and reduce fuel consumption.

10. Minimize aerodynamic drag.

Additional parts on the exterior of a vehicle such as roof racks and spoilers, or having the window open. Roof racks are bad for fuel economy increases air resistance and fuel consumption, in some cases by over 20%.

11. Don't let your engine idle.

Minimize fuel wasted in idling by stopping the engine whenever your car is stopped or held up for an extended period of time. Idling more than a minute consumes much more fuel than restarting the engine.

By having the engine switched off, you will save more fuel than is lost from the burst of fuel involved in restarting the engine. The net increased wear and tear from this practice is negligible.

12. Use the air-con sparingly.

Air conditioners can use about 10 per cent extra fuel when operating. However, at speeds of over 80 km/h, use of air conditioning is better for fuel economy than an open window.

5 painless ways to save money

Everybody hates the notion of cutting back financially because it usually means living without things you like. But not always. There are many painless ways to save that could reduce your annual budget by thousands of dollars a year, said Erin Huffstetler, editor of the About.com Guide to Frugal Living.

Here are five great ways to save:

1. Switch to store brands.

An increasing number of grocery chains are launching their own lines of food, often even organics. By and large, these bargain brands cost vastly less than the name brands, but taste the same and, in fact, are often made by the same companies.

Switch and you could save 25 percent on your grocery bills, which are likely to run about $100 a week. Estimated savings: $25 weekly, $1,300 annually.

2. Make a list.

Whether you're buying groceries or gifts, spur-of-the-moment impulses are your enemy. Some experts estimate that 20 percent of grocery purchases and roughly 40 percent of retail purchases are the result of impulse buys. To curb those desires, make a list before you go shopping and stick to it.

If you're tempted to buy something on impulse, force yourself to go home and think about it. If you're still set on the item later, you can always put it on next week's list, Huffstetler said. Estimated savings here depend on how impulsive you are, but she thinks even the marginally impulsive would blow $20 a week, or just over $1,000 a year.

3. Carry snacks.

Buy a 12-pack of soda and each can is likely to cost less than 50 cents. But buy a soda at a restaurant or fast-food joint and you're likely to pay twice as much. The same holds true for virtually anything you eat out versus bring from home.

And the price differential is far greater if you're at a movie theater or an amusement park. There snack foods are likely to be marked up to four or five times their supermarket price. So if you know you're going to be out for several hours and likely to get hungry, throw an apple or granola bar in your car or purse; carry a six-pack of soda or water in your trunk.

If you frequent the junk food vending machines for an afternoon snack at work, go to Costco and get a big box full of whatever it is that you favor and keep it in your desk drawer or credenza (or substitute for a healthier snack). Over the course of a year, you'll save hundreds of dollars. If you're smart, you'll eat better too.

4. Use it up.

Before you run to the store, make sure you check your cupboards and fridge. There's a good chance that you've got lots of unused or partially used items that will go to waste while you waste your cash buying more. Whether its food, beauty care or hobby supplies, use it up before you replace it, Huffstetler suggested.

If you need ideas of how to use up the leftovers in your fridge, Huffstetler has a dozen recipes here that are specifically designed to use up what you've got.

5. Shop your insurance.

Once a year, when your policies are about to renew, make a point of shopping around for both auto and, if applicable, homeowner's coverage. This is particularly important if your circumstances have changed, including if you've gotten married or divorced, have a newly licensed teen, or moved.

That's because pricing strategies vary dramatically from insurer to insurer. Even if you made a point of getting the best price in the past, you might find that your insurer isn't as competitive today. Spending 15 minutes getting a few competitive quotes could save you hundreds of dollars.

how to speed up Internet browsing

When you first got your computer, you practically flew around the Internet. But if loading websites now takes forever, some simple housekeeping can help you speed up your browsing. So let's roll up our sleeves and get going.

First, think of your browser as a bike; the more baggage you load onto it, the slower you go, so start streamlining.

Browser History.

You can delete a lot of baggage if you clear your browsing history. All browsers store data from the sites you've been to. It's great if you want to remember where you've been recently on the web, but it can also slow the browser. Getting rid of that data can speed up how fast pages load.

* In Internet Explorer, hit Tools, Internet Options, general tab, and then, under Browsing history, click Delete.
* In Firefox, choose Tools, Clear Recent History.
* In Chrome, hit the wrench icon in the toolbar, choose History and Clear All History.

Toolbars.

Toolbars are notorious resource hogs.  If you aren't using a toolbar multiple times each day, ditch it. In Firefox, go to Tools, Add-ons, and Disable Toolbars. Chrome doesn't have toolbars per se.

Add-ons and Extensions.

These are like toolbars but may be running in the background, meaning they are less visible. It's a good idea to check to see you are really using these tools enough to merit their resource consumption.

* In Internet Explorer, go to tools Internet Options, Programs tab, and Manage Add-ons. You'll see all the add-ons that are enabled. I say disable everything but the Shockwave Flash add-on.
* In Firefox, hit Tools, and uninstall everything you can.
* In Chrome, go to Tools, Extensions and disable everything you can.

Bookmarks and Favorites.

Another drag on your browser comes from bookmarks. You thought you were being so organized with a few hundred bookmarks neatly filed by topic. But they can make your browser slower too. Limit them to 20 or so, and keep the rest in a Word document on your desktop.

To Export Bookmarks.

In Internet Explorer go to File, Import/Export and choose Export To A File, then choose Favorites. Open the HTML file it saves, copy everything and paste into a Word document. In Firefox you can open Bookmarks and copy the ones you want, then paste into a Word doc.  In Chrome, go to bookmarks, Bookmark Manager, and Export. Open the HTML document it saves, copy all, and paste into a Word doc.

Defragmenting.

Defragging your hard-drive is a well-known tool for speeding up all aspects of computing — even web browsing. Hit Start, type "defrag" n the search bar and open Disk Defragmenter.

Change Browsers.

Tom's Hardware is a tech site that tests the speed of browsers each year. Their most recent comparison shows Firefox is fastest, then the Chrome browser, Internet Explorer second to last, and then Apple's Safari is slowest.

6 morning tricks for instant energy

I feel lucky to consider myself a morning person, but I admit there are plenty of days when I could use a little oomph in the A.M. to get me going. And since being exhausted and draggy is a recipe for overeating, it’s important to find healthy ways to boost your energy levels so you don’t resort to junk food as a pick-me-up.

I’ve found that these tips help trick my body and mind into feeling more alert; as a bonus, they’re also sure to keep your weight in check too.

1. Pound protein.

Protein helps persuade your brain and stomach that they’re well nourished and satisfied; skimp on it and your hunger might lead you right to a bag of potato chips. In a recent study, volunteers whose daily protein consumption fell below 15 percent of their total calories were far hungrier after breakfast and ate more snacks throughout the day than those whose protein levels exceeded that amount.

The extra nibbling put them on track to gain more than two pounds a month had they kept it up. Hard-boiled eggs and Greek yogurt are great protein-packed breakfast options.

2. Kick off your day with chocolate.

Yep, you read that right. A square of dark chocolate has just the right amount of theobromine (a cousin to caffeine) to wake you up but not enough to cause a crash later, says chronic-fatigue specialist Jacob Teitelbaum, MD. It’s also chock-full of antioxidants, may decrease heart attack risk, lifts mood—and tastes delicious. Try it as a midmorning snack!

3. Go ahead—drink more coffee.

When was the last time you heard a doctor use the word miracle? There’s no need to give up coffee or feel guilty about drinking it to jump-start your day. Big, important recent studies have linked coffee to tremendous health benefits, including lowering skin cancer risk by 20 percent, stroke by 25 percent, and dying from prostate cancer by 60 percent. Drink it black or with a little skim milk to minimize calories.

4. Rise and shine early.

Being a night owl may be bad for your waistline, says sleep expert Michael Breus, PhD. People who stay up late and sleep late—specifically, they get more than half their sleep after 5:30 a.m.—also tend to eat more fast food and consume more of their calories after 8 p.m. than do normal sleepers.

In one study, the more that subjects ate after 8 p.m., the higher their body-mass index, even after controlling for other factors. One of the easiest things you can do to improve your weight loss is go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, preferably on the early side.

5. Eat something crunchy.

They make your jaw work hard, which can wake up your facial muscles, helping you feel more alert. Munch on an apple with breakfast for an energizing dose of extra fiber.

6. Make the bed.

First, this will thwart the temptation to crawl back into it and press snooze. But here’s a little bonus you haven’t thought of: Shaking out the sheets gets your arms moving above your heart, boosting your heart rate and invigorating your body.

maximizing your car resale value

Car value will depreciate straight when it is out from the showroom. However taking care of your car well will reduce your losses when you sell, or trade it later on. Below are some tips to help you maximize its resale values.

1. Buy a car with higher resale value.

Analyze before you buy. When you are in the market for a car, bear in mind that some types of car simply hold their resale value better than others due to a number of factors. You may find it beneficial to consult current reports reflecting which vehicles have been found to hold value best, and keep this information in consideration when shopping for your next vehicle.

2. Drive safely.

Avoid getting into a accident, as any history of collision damage can reduce your car's resale value, and a trained used car appraiser can spot the body work from a mile away. If your car is in a collision, use an experienced repair shop with a good reputation, and insist on using OEM factory parts.

3. Maintain your car well.

One of the most important things you can do after purchasing your car is to keep a regular routine maintenance schedule. Fix any problems as soon as they arise, and keep a well-documented history of all services performed by technicians.

Having your car serviced at dealerships will ensure a future buyer that the vehicle was always maintained by certified mechanics. Use your warranty to your advantage, and be sure to quickly replace any interior or exterior parts that have been broken. A well maintained vehicle is a rare find and significantly increases its value.

4. Keep it as original as possible.

Adding accessories can actually decrease the car value. Besides, you do not get to charge the buyer for the extra items, and will have to spend more to remove the parts later on if you do not want to pass them to the new owner. Anything that you permanently modify may make your car more difficult to sell. If you add window treatments, be sure that they meet the legal standards.

5. Use original and brand name parts in your car.

Original or quality brand name parts last longer and usually come with a warranty. prospective buyers will be more likely to recognize the brand name parts and this added credibility increases the value of the car.

6. Keep it clean.

If a car looks neat and taken care of, potential buyers will assume the car is more valuable. To keep the exterior of your car in mint condition, you should wash and wax it often. You can also use a custom car cover to protect the paint job and your investment. A car cover made specially for the make and model of your vehicle, will keep it protected form harsh elements and the weather.

7. Protect the interior.

Properly caring for the interior of your car will not only keep it looking new for you, it will also increase your chances of obtaining the best resale value for the vehicle when the time comes. Caring for the interior of a vehicle involves keeping it clean and protected.

Refrain form habits such as eating in the vehicle, which can lead to stains and odors. You may want to take cleaning a step further and apply protectant to the hard surfaces to protect against damaging UV rays.

save money

1. Save More Money by Wise Shopping.

You can save a lot of money every day by changing your shopping habits. Stop spending so much on food by honing your grocery shopping skills. Improve your health and build up your savings by making more frugal lifestyle choices. Save even more money by buying a wide variety of merchandise used, renting it, or borrowing it. Finally, make sure your credit card use helps keep your bank account healthy.

2. Saving on Food.

Spending less on food can really increase your savings, and you have many ways to save on food. Join the loyalty club at your local supermarkets and drug stores. Study the circular and local newspapers so you can combine coupons and specials.

Stock up on enough nonperishable items to last until the next sale, usually two weeks for seasonal foods and three to four weeks for soda or cereal. Examine marked-down items, such as produce, and buy them if they pass your quality test. In addition to your supermarket and drugstore, compare prices at the superstores, club stores and other discount stores.

3. Saving with Healthier Habits.

If you smoke, stop and enjoy savings every day and breathe easier. If you usually drive, take public transportation bus. You will have less stress and save on gas. If you walk to the bus stop or train station, you will also benefit from exercise. Find other habits you can change and save more money. For example, cut back on candy, desserts, beer and other alcohol.

4. Saving by Buying used or Borrowing.

If you always buy new, you have been missing opportunities to save money, according to MSN Money author Liz Pulliam Weston. She suggests borrowing books from your library or buying them at used bookstores and garage sales. Go online to buy used books, CDs, DVDs. Look for used jewelry at pawnshops, online sites or newspaper ads.

Weston suggests having jewelry checked by a jeweler before making a purchase. Other used items to buy include office furniture, toys, sports equipment and tools. You can also rent or borrow tools for occasional use. For bigger savings, buy used cars.

5. Saving on Credit Cards.

You can save a lot money by proper use of credit. If charging everything makes you buy more and pay hefty interest charges, switch to cash and save. If your credit rating permits, get a low-rate, low-fee card and save. Make sure you have the best reward card of its kind.

choosing a venue for conference

* Choosing the right hotel for an upcoming conference is one way to make sure the attendees get the most from the meeting. Ideally, the hotel you choose will have plenty of meeting space for classes and sessions as well as an area that is large enough for different types of conference exhibits.

* Determine the anticipated attendance for the conference. Utilize historical data from past conferences to come up with an average number of attendees.

* Consider the amount of space needed for the conference exhibits. Think in terms of the number of vendors or other organizations that may be asked to exhibit, and focus attention on hotels that offer a large enough area for this portion of the event.

* Ask about the number a size of conference rooms available. Many conferences require multiple assembly rooms that provide space for small group and large group gatherings over the course of the conference. Make sure each space has access to audio-visual equipment for use in presentations.

* Discuss potential arrangements for meal catering and menu planning as well as cocktails and finger foods for breaks between sessions. Ideally, the hotel you choose can prepare a menu varied enough to manage the dietary requirements of your attendees.

* Negotiate discounted rates for all services needed, including price breaks on the guestrooms and use of any amenities on the grounds. Obtain the lowest rates possible for the conference rooms, and space so that registration and exhibition fees are equitable for attendees while still covering the expenses for the entire event.

business sales letters

Business sales letters are an ideal way to promote your business. Your business is an extension of yourself. It is imperative that you present clients and customers as well as your prospective clients and customers be kept updated about the goods and services which you are offering.

All business sales letters that are written and dispatched by you, act as advertisements and PR for your business.

Business sales letters serve a dual function. They bring about increased awareness of your merchandise through the e-mails or the more conventional mails.

The clients and customers further spread this knowledge to others through word to mouth. Thus, your product is extensively publicized. This directly affects your business ventures.

The sales copywriter is to stick to the topic of business while composing business sales letters. The ethos of your letters should depict your professionalism. The first impression that you convey will be remembered.

Business letter can be formatted in four different ways, including the following:

1. Block letter format.

Most commonly used, this format consists of the text being left aligned, single spaced with paragraphs having double space.

2. Semi block format.

This is exactly same as block letter format besides the first line of each paragraph is indented.

3. Alternative block format.

This is same as block and semi block format. The only deviation lies in it having the return address, name, closing, date, designation and signature invariably on the left side.

4. Simplified format.

This format style is like the block letter format without including greeting and salutation. Simplified format addresses the reader whose gender is not known for sure, in an appropriate way.

All the above mentioned formats require certain rules to be followed such as:

* Write the complete return address and you may complement it with the logo of your business.

* The date the business letters are being dispatched.

* Name, title, and address of the recipient. By using envelopes with windows you can save on cost and do away with labels.

* Greetings - Commence with a greeting such as "Dear Recipient (name)" and also end the letter with his formal name.

The business letter should contain three paragraph. First is the introductory one stating what the letter is about. The next paragraph contains the main information to be conveyed and the last paragraph sums up the entire letter. Finally, conclude with a "Sincerely" or "Best Regards".

As you or a professional complete the task of sales letter writing, you will gain an insight about which product is being advertised and the best technique to connect with your clients or customers.

Mastering the art of compiling excellent business sales letters will take time. With the use of appropriate words, you can reach out to the customers by innovative style of sales copy-writing. This will set your business on the path to success.

problem solving techniques

* It is important that you come to a meeting with your co-worker prepared to listen carefully to the other person, even if it is difficult to do so.

* By the same token, ask the other person to listen respectfully to what you have to say, without interrupting.

* To further clarify the disagreement, a technique you can use is to have the other party write a bullet list on a white board of conflicts and issues.

* Sit quietly while the person explains each bullet point.

* When the person finishes, go down the list, and restate the complains in your own words, as accurately as possible. This way, the person knows that you have listened and understood.

* Then write down your list and reverse the process. Usually, just being clear on the conflict makes it easy to find a mutual solution.

* Inviting the other person to discuss the issue may be the hardest part of the whole process. It can be remarkably hard to take that first step. Do it anyway!

* There is no guarantee the method described here will resolve your conflict at work. It may, or it may not.

* But even if it doesn't work you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have tried. You have risen above the conflict for a while and tried to address it positively and constructively.

* No matter what happens, remain optimistic. It helps.

guide to writing non-fiction

1. Pick something you know, or want to know. Your non-fiction book could be information about a place where the reader might be vacationing, or information on a place in general. It could be about today's society, or a contemporary or historical leader or person of interest. The only caveat for true non-fiction is that it be factual.

2. Research. You can never know too much about a subject. If you are having trouble or reach a stumbling block, try these things:

* Go online. Sometimes it will take a bit of digging to narrow things down, but let the search engines of the world help you in your knowledge quest. Follow not just the main articles, but the referenced articles as well.

* Read another non-fiction book about, or related to your subject. The author may see things from a different perspective, and may have some information you were not aware of.

* Ask an expert. There is likely an expert in the field who has made it their life's work to know everything about the topic you are writing on. Seek them out, and ask them if there is something that might be unique and interesting about your subject.

* Read an encyclopedia. Yes, it's a boring job, but somebody's got to do it. It might as well be you, as you gather all the information you need for your book.

3. Add copious descriptive details. No one wants to read a boring book! Good books are enriched with details and colour.

birdwatching tips

You probably hear birds every day, but can you tell one bird song from the next? Birdwatching, or birding, is an increasingly popular hobby in many parts of the world. Venturing out to look for and listen to various species of birds in your locality can be both enriching and relaxing. All you need is a pair of binoculars, a field guide, and a willingness to observe.

1. Get a pair of binoculars.

A pair with reasonable magnification (e.g. 7x or 8x) and lighter weight often works better in cluttered environments like forest or woodland. Higher magnification glasses (10x or 12x) are better for open country and wetland birding, but some people will find them difficult to hand hold and therefore suffer a more shaky image.

* Choose between porro of roof prisms. Most serious birders use top range roof prisms, such as the Swarovski EL, Leica Ultravid, or Zeiss Victory FL range. The top of the range models use this design as it is more compact and more comfortable to use. Inexpensive binoculars are generally porro prism. Inexpensive roof prisms (especially those without phase coating) are generally to be avoided.

* Also take into consideration the binocular strap. When you go into the field, you will be wearing a dead weight on your neck for hours, so make sure the strap is wide and comfortable. Some birders use a harness that distributes weight to the shoulders and back instead of the neck.

* Calibrate your binoculars before you go birding.

2. Get a field guide.

Some people prefer the guides with illustrations because photographs can lead to confusion due to poor lighting, flash, posture, etc. Get into the habit of studying the birds' habits, calls, and field marks before birding. This way, you will be ready to identify a particular bird the instant you see it.

3. Find other bird watchers.

If you really enjoy bird watching, search online for birding groups and chapthers near you. Many lead bird walks that you can attend. Contact local universities or parks to find out whether classes or walks are being offered. The more sets of eyes and ears there are, the more birds you will find, especially if you go with bird watchers who are more experienced than you.

4. Start bird watching in the morning.

When birds are searching for food, and listen. Most of the time, you will be surrounded by birdcalls and songs, but will not have a single bird in sight. Look for movement in trees, and bring your binoculars to your eyes. Don't try to find the bird through your binoculars.

* If you can't go to the birds, bring the birds to you. Putting up bird feeders and keeping them filled with fresh bird food is an effective way to attract birds to your own yard. Do some reading to determine which type of feeds will attract the birds you are particularly interested in.

Sunflower seeds will attract quite a few varieties and might be nice to start with. You can also install a bird fountain. Most things that can hold shallow water will do. Running or dripping water especially interest birds.

* Dress appropriately, as you would for hiking. Colours that blend in the surrounding landscape will help to stop birds from avoiding your presence.

* Proceed quietly. Loud talking or laughing can cause birds to flee before you even get close.

5. Identify the bird.

You have spotted in your field guide. You will find that birds stick to certain ranges - range maps will be shown in your field guide. Do not focus on colour as this alone can lead to miss identifications. Focus on shape, size, markings, posture, behavior, etc.

* If you have time, and if you are interested in having a visual record, take a picture of the bird. This can be difficult when you are starting out, especially since you will need to use a camera on a tripod with a telescope or binoculars (a practice known as digiscoping) to get the shot.

* To find more and different birds, you may plan trips to different habitats: forests, mudflats, lakes, rivers, fields or meadows. Eventually, you may travel even further to places, which host birds you are not likely to see near your home.

6. Create your "life list".

This is a list of every species of bird you have seen. Eventually, you may progress to create various other lists: yard lists, month lists, year lists, state lists, etc. and you may start traveling so you can catch sight of a rare bird to add to your list. Write down the bird species, gender, location and date.

7. Respect the birds.

Birdwatching etiquette and ethics are important in making sure that as birding becomes more popular, the birds' habitats are not disturbed. Some guidelines include:

* Don't stress the birds with recordings or artificial lighting.

* Don't get too close to the nests, nesting colonies, roosts, display areas, and important feeding sites.

* Respect private property.

* Avoid advertising the presence of a rare bird if it may result in habitat disturbance.

* Don't attract birds to areas where they are in danger.
